How to

Step 1: Learn the Rhythm

Hold the poi with one hand and get used to the rhythm.

  1. Cross, cross, return — spin twice on the crossed side, then once on the original side, making a total of three rotations. This is how you create the three-beat rhythm. It’s important to draw two full circles on the crossed side.
  2. Once you get the hang of it, extend your other (poi-free) arm forward and move it: up, down, return — up, down, return. Practice until this movement becomes smooth. Moving your arm in a circular motion will naturally help you switch between up and down.
  3. Practice the same way with the opposite poi.
