Reel Turn

Summary

The poi passes behinf the back when making a turn.
It uses the turning of the hands called the Reel.
The Reel Turn from Forward spin is called the Hip Reel Turn or the Low Reel Turn, or simply as the Low Turn.
The Reel Turn from the Backward spin is called the Shoulder Reel Turn or The High Reel Turn, or just as the High Turn.

How to

The Reel Turn from the Forward Spin.

Let's look at the timing when you make a turn.
With the basic Carry Turn, you make a turn with the Forward Spin when the poi come down.
You wait for a half spin for the poi to come up on the back side with the Reel turn when making a turn.
This time, the wrists are behind and the palms are facing upward.
After you make a turn, scoop up the poi and connect it to the Backward Spin.

The Reel Turn from the Backward Spin.

Let's take a look at the timing when making a turn.
You make a turn when the poi come up with the Ccarry Turn.
Wait for a half spin more to make a turn with the Reel Turn and turn when the poi come down to the back side from the highest point.
The palms are facing upward when turning, and bring the poi up for after turning 180° and connect it to the Forward Spin.

Tips

How to practice to do the Reel Turn from the Forward Spin.

Hit your back with the poi by turning the wrists from the Forward Spin.
Hit your back with the poi for a few times and memorize the poi move with the body, then turn the body before the poi hits the back.
Bring the poi up after turning and connect it to the Backward spin.
If you're turining to the right, bring the poi to your left shoulder, and if you're turning to the left, bring the poi to the right shoulder, and this makes it smooth to make a turn.
Fix your hands around your hips when making a turn.
Make a turn with the palms facing upward when you turn.

How to practice the High Reel Turn.

Spin the poi from the Backward Spin and turn your hands to the back side when the poi come down from the top and hit your hips.
The palms are facing upward.
Turn your body for 180° and bring the poi back to the front.
After you can picture it in your mind, turn before the poi hits the hips and connect.
